It may have been extinct for around 66 million years, but Tyrannosaurus rex is by far the best known and most recognizable of all dinosaurs. This could be due to the large number of tyrannosaurus fossils, including several nearly complete skeletons, discovered over the years, mainly in western North America. But it may also be because the T-Rex, as it is colloquially known, was one of the scariest animals to ever walk the earth.
This fearsome dinosaur comes to life in the fifth coin in the "Supersaurs" series being issued by the Austrian Mint, Münze Österreich.
With about 12 meters long,4 meters tall and weighing between 6 and 8 tons, the Tyrannosaurus rex is one of the most famous dinosaur species, and also one of the best known thanks to certain specimens, some of which have acquired a high degree of popularity given its scientific importance and its dissemination by the media.
It lived at the end of the Cretaceous period, approximately between 68 and 66 million years ago, in what is now North America. Its distribution on the continent was much wider than other tyrannosaurids. Commonly abbreviated as T. Rex, and Castilianized as Tyrannosaurus it is a common figure in popular culture. It was one of the last non-avian dinosaurs to exist before the Cretaceous-Tertiary mass extinction.
This coin and all those in the series have the peculiarity that they have been colored with special inks that make the silhouette of the animal represented in the piece glow in the dark. The Austrian Mint will officially issue this fifth piece in the series on November 4.
