Estonia already has the design that will present its currency of 2 euros commemorative of 2017 under the name "Road to the Independence of Estonia". The piece is dedicated to commemorate the events that preceded the independence of Estonia in 1918. The design belongs to Jaan Meristo, after he won the design competition convened by the Bank of Estonia (Eesti Pank) to be represented in the currency.

The design of the two-euro commemorative coin dedicated to the events that preceded the independence of Estonia shows oak leaves and the trunk of an oak with bare branches. The oak symbolizes Estonia's winding road to independence, the bare branches refer to the year 1917, and the leaves symbolize strength, performance and longevity. The oak leaves are present in the coat of arms of the Republic of Estonia.

Jaan Meristo, winner of the tender for the design of the coin, which was presented 32 projects, will receive a prize of 2,000 euros once it is issued in the second half of this year.An emission volume of 1.5 million pieces is announced.

The Centennial of the Republic of Estonia will be in 2018, but the state was not founded in a single day. Estonia gained autonomy after the February revolution in Russia in 1917, when the province of Estonia was created. On 1 July 1917 the first representative parliament of the Estonian people, known as Maapäev, was constituted. It was declared the highest organ of power in Estonia on November 15, 1917. It was a major step towards statehood.
