The Royal Mint’s second release of The Queen’s Beasts Series – The Griffin – is now available at APMEX!
The Griffin of Edward III is the second beast to be featured in the 10-coin series from The Royal Mint. Jody Clark, acclaimed coin designer for The Royal Mint, is the talent behind the Queen’s Beasts series. His inspiration came from sculptor James Woodford’s work of the Queen’s Beasts that stood guard at Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation ceremony in 1953. Today, these sculptures can be found at the Canadian Museum of History in Quebec.
Well beyond the 1953 coronation, there is much history associated with the Queen’s Beasts and British rulers. For example, the griffin, the second in this coin series, signifies strength and courage and was found on the private seal of Edward III, who ruled from 1327-1377.
The obverse of the coin features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, also designed by Jody Clark. The reverse displays a majestic griffin as well as the metal weight, purity and year. This design comes in two different sizes. The Gold is struck as a 1 oz coin and the Silver Queen’s Beasts is struck as a 2 oz coin.
These Gold and Silver coins are available now to order at APMEX! The expected shipping date for these coins will be December 9. There are eight more coins in this series, including the unicorn of Scotland, red dragon of Wales, white lion of Mortimer and Yale of Beaufort. Add these striking coins to your collection today and keep up with the entire series from The Royal Mint and APMEX.
