As always, the 2 euro commemorative coins issued by Greece are expected, yesterday were finally distributed in the country's banks, in the classic rolls of 25 coins, the two planned for this 2018, dedicated to the «75 Years of death de Kostis Palamás »and the« 70th Anniversary of the Union of the Dodecanese Islands with Greece ». Both coins have a circulation of 750,000 pieces.
This year it is worth noting that coins in coincards are not issued, as in previous years, nor are individual cases with coins in Proof quality. The only way to get them in a superior quality, is to acquire some of the 2,000 Eurosets in Proof quality that contain both, along with the other regular coins of 2018. But beware that the price is quite high, already far exceeds 100 euros and its low circulation is sure to make it much more expensive.
Kostís Palamás (January 13, 1859 - February 27, 1943) was a Greek poet and dramatist, author of the lyrics of the Olympic hymn.
Considered one of the main renovators of contemporary Greek letters, Palamás, by opting to write his work in the language of the people (Greek demotic or dimotikí ) opened a new path of lyrical expression that has been followed by most poets to the present day.
The design shows a portrait of the Greek poet Kostís Palamás (1859-1943). The words "HELLENIC REPUBLIC" and the name "KOSTÍS PALAMÁS" (in Greek) appear on the inside left edge. There is also a palmetto (the mint mark of the Greek Mint) and the year of issue: «2018». In the lower right part you can see the artist's monogram (Yorgos Stamatópoulos). The twelve stars of the European flag appear in the circular crown of the coin.
The Dodecanese (from Greek Δωδεκάνησα , Dodekànisa meaning twelve islands) is one of the Greek archipelagos of the Aegean Sea, located very close to the coast of Turkey.
It is made up of 163 islands, of which only 26 are inhabited. Its main islands are: Rhodes, Kárpatos, Kasos, Kastelorizo, Simi, Tilos, Nisiros, Astipalea, Kos, Kalimnos, Leros, Patmos and Kastelorizo.
In the course of the twentieth century, the islands after changing hands several times, in 1912 began the Italian occupation that led to annexation in 1923, then came the enosis (union) with Greece in 1948.
The design shows a rose in the central part, emblem of Rhodes, and is inspired by a coin minted in the ancient city of Rhodes. It is one of the most characteristic coins of the Dodecanese, with stylized waves fanning out from the center. The words "1948-2018 THE UNION OF DODECANESE WITH GREECE" and "HELLENIC REPUBLIC" (in Greek) are found on the inside edge. There is also a palmetto (the mint mark of the Greek Mint) on the left side and the artist's monogram (Yorgos Stamatópoulos) on the right side. The twelve stars of the European flag appear in the circular crown of the coin.
