In 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of The Snowman, an English children's book written by the author Raymond Briggs and published in 1978. The Royal Mint wants to celebrate the anniversary by issuing a commemorative coin specially designed for the occasion.

On a cold winter night, a snowman comes alive and befriends the child who built it. After exploring the child's house together and sharing a candlelight feast, the two of them fly across the frozen field, before running home to beat at dawn, but the wonder turns to sadness. The next morning, the child wakes up to find that his snowman has melted.

The famous Raymond Briggs characters come alive with a design, modeled by Robin Shaw, where the child and the snowman rise through the night sky together over the twinkling lights of Brighton Pier, a beautiful memory that captures the magic of this charming story.
