The World Youth Day (WYD) is an international event organized by the Catholic Church that brings together young people from all over the world, Catholics and other confessions. It is presided over by the Pope and has been celebrated since 1985 every two or three years. In 2019 Panama will be the scene of this event between the 22nd and 27th of January.
The Ministry of Economy and Finance of Panama approved the issuance of a series of coins, both circulation and collection, in order to commemorate the World Youth Day to be held in Panama in 2019. Circulation coins have with a facial of 1 balboa and 20 of the collection. Both have the same designs.
Yesterday, October 8, the first coin of the series was put into circulation in which the image of the Cathedral Basilica Santa María La Antigua is represented.
The reverse is the same as the current circulation currency of 1 balboa.

A total of eight circulation coins will be issued between 2018 and 2019. Each circulation coin will have the metallic composition, weight, security measures and dimensions provided for the currencies of a balboa. It will bear the following inscriptions: On the front, in the center will contain one of the images alluding to the six churches that make up the Old Town, as well as another that will contain the official logo of the World Youth Day and on the lower part of the front will take the year 2019. On the reverse, in the center. the Coat of Arms of the Republic, in the outline, in the upper part, the phrase "REPUBLIC OF PANAMA" and, in the lower part, the denomination "UN BALBOA".

As for the collection currency, 2,000 sets of coins in Proof quality will be issued. These will have 6 church designs, plus the logo of the WYD. The coins have a facial of 20 balboas, a diameter of 38 millimeters and are presented is a wooden case. This collection of coins has a purity of 99.99% silver, with a selective bath of 24 carat gold. Each of these cases has the complete set of commemorative coins and will be available from the month of December of this year at the price of 1,000 balboas (871 euros).
