Story

Coin Invest Trust's (CIT) latest creation puts a smile on the face of every observer. It is dedicated to the Laughing Buddha, a popular theme of Asian origins.

The commemorative coin, available in two editions, unites some of the most innovative minting techniques. So the silver edition, made of two ounces fine silver and limited to 888 pieces, shows an impressively high relief thanks to smartminting© and gilded sections on the Black Proof Finish coin field.

The shaped gold edition takes the form of a seated laughing Buddha. Like its predecessor Golden Sea Turtle, the Golden Laughing Buddha reaches a diameter of 13.92 mm at a weight of only 0.5 g thanks to Big Gold Minting©.

The story of the motif is known around the world. It can be traced back to a mendicant from the 10th century. He was said to be of frugal character, always wearing a cheerful smile on his lips. The name Buddha, or Budai, is derived from a cloth sack, in which he collected handouts for children and for the poor. As Hotei, the originally Chinese Buddha/Budai became one of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japanese Zen-Buddhism. Today you cannot only find him in Zen temples but oftentimes in restaurants, promoting the respective establishment’s delicacies.

Cherry Blossom Globe

Cook Islands: 1 Dollar 2017. Silver .999. 1/10 oz. 18 mm. Prooflike. Mintage: 2,017 pieces.

Design: Coin Invest Trust. Mint: B. H. Mayer’s Kunstprägeanstalt, Munich.

Description

The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Elizabeth II, also her name, the name of the issuing nation, and the nominal value.

The reverse shows a couple in embrace with a dog next to a cherry tree with pink blossoms as well as the year of issue.

Story

In April 2017 the Cherry Blossom Globe was presented on the occasion of the Tokyo International Coin Convention. A silver coin from the Cook Islands, which shows a couple in embrace next to a cherry tree, is presented in a snow globe, in which thousands of pink petals float around the couple.

With this creation CIT takes up the Cherry Blossom Festival, Hanami (花見), which is becoming increasingly popular outside of Japan as well. Between the end of March and the beginning of April, people get together in parks for a picnic and “flower viewing”. This tradition, which seems to date back to the eighth century, celebrates the beginning of spring and the transience of the cherry trees (Sakura). In Japan the delicate, fragrant cherry blossoms are also a traditional symbol of feminine grace and beauty.

Not just the theme but also its framing carries a lot of tradition. Each of the glass spheres from the manufacturer Vienna Snow Globes run by the Perzy family is handmade and filled with pure Alpine water. Company founder Erwin Perzy (1876-1964) was actually trained as a mechanic for surgical instruments. To amplify the light emission of the newly invented carbon filament lamp, he experimented with a water-filled bowl. When he added semolina for light reflexion, he noticed how beautifully and waterfall-like it sank to the ground. The snow globe was born.
