As I announced a few months ago Greece will issue in this 2019, as usual, two coins of 2 commemorative euros dedicated to two personalities of recognized prestige within the country. Today I can show you the first images of the sketches that will be represented in both currencies.

Centenary of the birth of Manolis Andronikos
One of the coins is dedicated to the "Centenary of the birth of Manolis Andronikos" one of the most prominent Greek archaeologists who brought to light one of the greatest archaeological monuments in the world.

He was born in Boursa, Turkey, on October 23, 1919, although his residence was the Greek city of Thessalonica. He studied philosophy at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In 1952 he became professor of classical archeology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

On November 8, 1977, the archaeologist Manolis Andronikos made a sensational discovery in the royal necropolis of Vergina, the intact tomb of Philip of Macedonia, father of Alexander the Great.

150 years after the death of Andreas Kalvos
The other is dedicated in memory of the poet Andreas Kalvos, under the name «150 years of the death of Andreas Kalvos».

Andreas Kalvos (April 1, 1792 - November 3, 1869) was a Greek poet of the Romantic school. He was one of the representatives of the Heptanese Literature School. Kalvos, a man with a great love for his land, seduces both his poetic tone and his themes and ideas. As a poet he decided to become the bard of Hellenic independence.

Both currencies will have an issue volume of 750,000 pieces, of which only 1,500 will be in Proof quality and will come within euroset in this quality along with the rest of regular circulation coins 2019.
