National Historical Park Harpers Ferry in West Virginia

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is located on the site where converge the states of Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland. The park, which includes the town of Harpers Ferry, is strategically located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. It was the site of the first pioneers of the route westward across the Appalachian Mountains and an important military objective during the Civil War. But he is best known as the site where John Brown aborted his attempt to instigate a revolution against slavery.

On October 16, 1859, John Brown, an abolitionist volatile, accompanied by their children and a small band of 21 revolutionaries, led an attack on the arsenal of Harpers Ferry. Their goal was to seize munitions, distribute among the slaves of the southern states and win the abolition of all slavery in the US .. His attempt failed. John Brown was captured and many of his men were killed in an encounter with federal troops in the small firehouse is now known as "Fort John Brown". This was tried for treason and executed, but his ideas survived. The great Civil War that ended with the abolition of slavery that John Brown had failed to achieve, began only two years later.
