José de Almada Negreiros
José Sobral Almada Negreiros was born in Sao Tome and Principe, (then Portuguese colony), on April 7, 1893. Poet and painter, is considered one of the key figures of the modernist movement in Portugal.
He was influenced by Cubism, but especially by Futurism.
Although he made several propaganda work during the dictatorship of Oliveira Salazar, in his works consistently addressed the criticism of the society of those years.
He began working as a cartoonist and illustrator until his first solo exhibition in 1913, at the International School of Lisbon, where he presented ninety drawings.
In 1915 he began publishing his poetry in the journal Orpheu.
