O nouă monedă comemorativă franceză în trei variante - 21.03.2016

In 2012 the Monnaie de Paris began a series of collector coins dedicated to the great French ships over the centuries. Five are the years that has lasted this series, which concludes in this 2016, in which each year is paying homage to a sailing ship, a warship and an ocean liner.

I will present the first of this year dedicated to sailing Belem, which will have three versions for the same design, with facial 10 euros minted in silver and the other two 50 euros one in silver and one in gold.





The boat is shown with all its sails right in the center of the coin on the obverse. As background elements inside wooden sailboat shown. The name of the ship is registered in the top of the coin inside a rope.





The reverse shows a common composition to all the currencies of the series dedicated to sailing. The rudder of the ship and two jibs or candles in which one of them the figurehead of Belem is represented.

Sailboat Belem




The Belem was built in Nantes in 1896. Its function was to transport goods from Nantes to Brazil and India, where imported cocoa and sugar for the Parisian chocolatier M. Menier.

Purchased by the Duke of Westminster in 1914, the Belem undergoes profound changes to adapt to his new role: a large luxurious sailboat.

Already in 1921 under the name of Fantôme II, the Belem out to sail around the world with its new owner, Ernest Guinness, owner of the famous Irish beer factory.

After the death of Guiness, the Fantôme II remains on the Isle of Wight during the war.

In 1951, the ship is sold to the Cini Foundation to operate as a school ship Silla Institute, under the name of Giorgio Cini.

In 1979 Belem returns to France, thanks to a joint project of the Caisses d'Epargne of France and the Navy. In 1980, the Belem Foundation was created. the school of ship: After a process of restoration, the Belem to a new era and a new mission fits.
