When most of us had barely remembered this series of coins, issued between 2016 and 2018 in Finland dedicated to the Presidents that the country has had since its independence in 1917 and who have already passed away, a new piece has just been issued dedicated to Martti Ahtisaari, who died in 2023.

Please note that this series of coins is bimetallic and has a face value of 5 euros. All of them, including the one I am presenting to you today, have been designed by Tero Lounas.

Martti Ahtisaari

Martti Ahtisaari was the first President of the Republic of Finland to be directly elected by popular vote, serving from 1994 to 2000. Ahtisaari led Finland towards internationalism and achieved the country's entry into the European Union in 1995. He is remembered around the world for resolving major conflicts. In 2008 he was awarded the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize for his work.

The obverse of the coin features the portrait of President Martti Ahtisaari, his name and the years he lived 1937-2023.

The reverse, common to the entire series, features a Finnish rural landscape, framing an open book depicting a built urban environment. The illustration symbolises the mandate given by the people to the president to fulfil his duties.
