According to the official information we just received from the Ufficio Philatelic and Numismatico Vatican, 2 euro coin commemorative 2016 by the Holy Year of Mercy is issued on 13 October, minted in two grades, BU and Proof, price, for subscribers, 18 and 37 euros respectively.
The design of the coin shows San Martin de Tours sharing his cloak with a poor man.Around reason inscriptions include "GIUBILEO della Misericordia" left, and "CITTÀ DEL VATICANO ', right, both in semicircle. On the right also include the year of issue "2016" and, at the bottom, the mint mark 'R' and the artist's name "M. Crisciotti ".
The realization of the 2 euro coin dedicated to the Holy Year of Mercy has been entrusted to Mariangela Crisciotti and represents St. Martin of Tours, a soldier of the Roman imperial guard while on his young horse with sword his cloak to give it to a poor half-naked and shivering he finds along the way.
The representation is related to the classic iconography and is surely an example of one of the seven works of mercy - to clothe the naked - recalling the words of Jesus: "I was naked and you clothed me."
According to tradition, the night after such an episode, Jesus appeared in a dream to St. Martin under the guise of a poor showing him the mantle said, "Martin while yet a catechumen has covered me with this garment." Upon awakening, finding miraculously intact mantle, St. Martin decided to be baptized and continue militating only under the banner of Christ.
