Today we mark 50 years since the Battle of Long Tan. On this day we remember the soldiers that left the Nui Dat taskforce base on 18 August 1966, unaware of the historic fate that lay before them. In honour of those who served in this conflict, a design featuring the cross raised in the Long Tan rubber plantation has been struck as a 38.74 mm crown coin https://eshop.ramint.gov.au/2016-5-Uncirculated-Coin/311249.aspx

Ahead of the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, the Mint has released a special commemorative collectible coin to remember those soldiers who fought and died during the battle. Fifty years ago on 18 August 1966, 108 Australian and New Zealand troops encountered a force of more than 2000 Vietnamese and Viet Cong soldiers in the rubber plantation of Long Tan. A total of 17 Australians were killed in action and 25 were wounded, one of whom later died of his wounds. On the third anniversary of the battle, a cross was raised in the Long Tan rubber plantation to recognise those who fought and died throughout the conflict and this special symbol of reverence appears on a 38.74 mm crown coin.
