In Germany, a coin named “Advent Wreath” will be issued in the coming days as part of the “Christmas” series. The series, which began in 2021, is dedicated to one of the most important Christian holidays, deeply rooted in the culture and customs of many countries, including our own.

Hanging or placing an Advent wreath on Christmas Eve is a relatively recent custom. It dates back to the Pietist pastor Johann Hinrich Wichern (1808-1881), who placed the first Advent wreath in an educational institution in Hamburg in 1839. In the “Rauhes Haus”, where children in need of protection were cared for, Wichern held a daily devotional service from 1 to 24 December. At each service, a candle was lit on a wagon wheel until all the candles were shining brightly on Christmas Eve. The candles on Sundays were white, the candles on other days were red. This wreath is still called the “Wichern wreath” today.

From this origin, the customs surrounding the Advent wreath initially developed in Protestant circles and by the beginning of the 20th century became widespread in churches and private homes. It was not until 1925 that the first Advent wreath was hung in a Catholic church in Cologne and in 1930 in Munich. The number of candles was gradually reduced to four and from around 1860 onwards a wreath of evergreen leaves in fir green was preferred. Regional variants include, for example, wooden rings with turned figures.

The symbolism of the Advent wreath is based on the fact that the rising light symbolises the imminent arrival of the Son of God as the “light of the world”. The circular shape, the pine green and the colour of the candles can also be interpreted symbolically. The circle represents eternity and infinity and in the Christian context also the resurrection. The fir green is a sign of hope, the four candles can be interpreted as the four directions, while the preferred colour red represents the love and light of Jesus Christ.

The coin depicts the theme of the Advent wreath and its historical development. It combines elements of Johann Hinrich Wichern's Advent wreath with the look we are used to today. The entire circular surface of the coin is used in a concentric arrangement, consisting of the fir wreath, the original wagon wheel and the four candles. Johann Hinrich Wichern's idea that the light increases at Christmas is put into practice. Above the wreath, a comet can be seen in the universe. This connects the pre-Christmas Advent wreath custom with the Star of Bethlehem and the birth of Jesus.

The value side shows an eagle, the inscription “FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY”, the number and denomination of the value, the mint mark “F” of the Baden-Württemberg State Mint, Stuttgart Mint, the year 2024 and the twelve European stars.

The coin is made of fine silver (Ag 999) and is made in high relief on a plate (concave curvature on the image side for a three-dimensional representation of the motif). The coin is produced in two qualities: uncirculated and with a proof finish. The uncirculated quality coins are sold in Germany at their face value (25 euros). The proof quality coins are sold in Germany for 45.95 euros. The exact issue date is 21 November.

The Proof quality coin is presented in a wallet. The coin capsule has a hole so that the coin can be hung on the Christmas tree, for example.
