The Central Bank of Liberia announced a revamp of its existing currency on July 27 and added a $500 note to the existing lineup of $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 denominations. The Liberian dollar is the equivalent of 1.1 U.S. cents and circulates side by side with the U.S. dollar as legal tender currency.
The design of the $500 note will differ from the others in that it will contain portraits of ordinary Liberians on the face as opposed to famous leaders from the country’s past. Liberian wildlife is portrayed on the back. The backs of all the notes include the seal of the bank with a Kissi penny, a staple of the traditional money category, as part of its design.
The designs of the other notes in the new series will remain the same as in the series they are replacing.
The changes, according to a bank statement, are to keep with the bank’s “statutory mandate to at all times ensure that the integrity of the Liberian Dollar is uncompromisingly maintained.” The revamped notes will have new visible and invisible security features and be printed on higher quality material that provides longer life and lower porosity, according to the Central Bank of Liberia.
The notes are printed by Thomas De La Rue & Company Ltd. and will at first co-circulate along with the old notes currently in circulation.

The coins were studied by Dr. Ali Rajabli and subsequently cleaned by Dr. Rauf Guliyev.
The coins date back to the rule of Eldiguzids dynasty (12th century), also known as Atabegs of Azerbaijan.
The inscriptions show that the coins were minted on behalf of the Seljuk Sultan Arslan Shah (1161-1176).
The name of the Abbasid Caliph was depicted on one side of the dirham, while the 33rd verse of Surah At-Taubah from the Holy Quran on the other side.
The ANAS is the main state research organization and the primary body that conducts research and coordinates activities in the fields of science and social sciences in Azerbaijan. It was established on 23 January 1945.

The oldest coin in the world was just sold by a rare coin company in Austin to a private collector. Estimated to be one of only 12 known in the world today, the coin was struck 2,650 years ago in Ionia, or modern-day Turkey.
By Austin Rare Coins and Bullion …..
Austin Rare Coins and Bullion announced today that they have just completed the sale of the first coin ever struck in human history. Referred to as an Ionian “Striated” Stater, it is estimated that only 12 exist in the world today.
Minted nearly three thousand years ago in modern-day Turkey, the coin is made fromelectrum, a naturally occurring alloy of gold and silver that was found in streams and riverbeds. The striated lines on the front of the coin are believed to represent flowing water, which is where electrum was found.
“This remarkable coin represents the beginning of money and commerce as we know it today,”said Ryan Denby, President of Austin Rare Coins. “After nearly four years of patiently waiting, we were finally able to acquire this coin on behalf of our clients and they couldn’t be more excited with the outcome.”
The coin was assigned the grade of About Uncirculated condition with a star for outstanding eye appeal. “Our clients were thrilled with the exceptional look of the coin and the remarkably high grade,” said Denby.
Ionian Staters were struck in different sizes, each representing different values of money. There are six primary sizes, ranging from a Full Stater down to a tiny 1/24th stater. All are extremely rare, though the larger sizes are the most infrequently encountered.
In the case of the Full Stater, only 12 are estimated to exist, making complete sets almost impossible to assemble.
“With the help of Capstone Acquisitions we were able to help our clients complete the entire set of Ionian Striated Staters, and we believe them to be only one of three collectors in the world to accomplish this awesome feat,” Denby stated.

In an age of alternative payments, what is the future of traditional money?
Study by British firm predicts future use of coins and paper money
By Arthur L. Friedberg
A study from the British firm Smithers Pira, that calls itself a worldwide authority on the packaging, paper and print industry supply chains, predicts the future of traditional money like coins and notes.
Getty Images.
A new report, just issued, should assuage the fear of collectors that with the rise of alternate payment technologies currency will soon be a thing of the past.
A study from the British firm Smithers Pira, that calls itself a worldwide authority on the packaging, paper and print industry supply chains, says that the number of bank notes in circulation worldwide will grow at an annual rate of 5 percent from 2016 to 2026, and that there will be 943 billion bank notes, not to mention 179 billion coins, in use worldwide by the end of the 10-year period.
Promotional material from the firm says the massive document studies the prospective cash situations in Brazil, Germany and Poland, and includes discussions such as the reasons Germans have a proclivity for using cash, the life cycles of currency, bitcoin, the benefits of paying in cash, and what it calls the “banknote-coin boundary.”
The full report, titled Fit for Circulation: The Future Lifecycles of Currency to 2026, is available from the firm for £4,200 or about $5,500. Go here for details.
About one form of alternative money
One of the most widely used virtual form of currency is Bitcoin, which allows individuals to exchange credits for goods and services.
Bitcoin is an unregulated virtual currency that is not backed by any government and is exchanged only over the Internet, and there are just-as-unregulated physical bitcoins out there that collectors may (or may not) care to take note of.
Physical bitcoins can be used as typical online bitcoins, but the virtual element is paired with a physical, struck coin.
While virtual currencies like Bitcoin have their supporters, some governments have warned about their use. The U.S. Congress has conducted a hearing on the topic, as Coin World reported here.

Exponatul lunii septembrie: ALBUM FOTOGRAFIC – HORTENSIA PAPADAT-BENGESCU LA KARLSBAD
Exponatul lunii septembrie: ALBUM FOTOGRAFIC – HORTENSIA PAPADAT-BENGESCU LA KARLSBAD
