The Prado Museum opened to the public on November 19, 1819 as the Royal Museum of Painting and Sculpture. In 2019 the 200th anniversary of this spectacular and well-known museum is celebrated. To commemorate this event, the FNMT issues next Monday, March 18, three square coins in silver and three gold coins, reproducing well-known works of art from the Prado Museum.

Coins in square silver with facial of 10 euros
On the obverse of the first piece is reproduced in colors the work entitled "The naked maja", made by Francisco de Goya y Lucientes before 1800, which is preserved in the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid. It surrounds the motifs and legends a gráfila of pearls and pinions interrupted in the part superior by a sector, in whose interior it appears, in horizontal sense and in capital letters, the legend GOYA.

At the beginning of the 19th century, Maja Desnuda and Maja Vestida were part of the painting collection of Manuel Godoy, prime minister of Carlos IV, it seems that Goya painted these paintings for him, although some details of this commission are unknown. The legend says that they belonged to the Duchess of Alba and that even she could have been the model, this theory is currently rejected. Considered in its indecent age, this nude is an affirmation of the sensuality of the beautiful body of the woman, exhibited in an intimist way without mythological or historical pretexts.

On the obverse of the second piece is reproduced in colors the work entitled "Prince Baltasar Carlos, on horseback", made by Diego Rodríguez de Silva and Velázquez between 1634 and 1635, which is preserved in the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid. It surrounds the motifs and legends a gráfila of pearls and pinions interrupted in the part superior by a sector, in whose interior it appears, in horizontal sense and in capital letters, the legend VELÁZQUEZ.

To symbolize the continuity of the dynasty, the equestrian portraits of Philip III and Queen Margrethe of Austria, fathers of Philip IV, were placed on the west wall of the Hall of Kingdoms, while on the opposite wall were those of Philip IV and his wife Isabel de Borbón. That of his heir, Prince Baltasar Carlos, was placed between the two above a door, which explains the proportions of the horse, painted to be seen from below. Baltasar Carlos, first-born son of Felipe IV, is represented with the general's uniform, indicating his preparation to take over in the Monarchy. His premature death prevented him from reigning.

On the obverse of the third piece is reproduced in color a fragment of the work entitled "The Annunciation", made by Domenicos Theotocopoulos, El Greco, between 1597 and 1600, which is preserved in the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid. It surrounds the motifs and legends a gráfila of pearls and pine nuts interrupted in the part superior by a sector, in whose interior it appears, in horizontal sense and in capital letters, the legend EL GRECO.

It is almost certain that this Annunciation, one of the greatest commissions received by El Greco in his career, was part of the main altar of the College of Doña María de Aragón, in Madrid. The painting shows the most characteristic style of El Greco with its elongated figures. Realized in a vertical format, the painting shows the elongation of the figures with risky scorings, without detriment to the excellent conception of the anatomy and the expression of the movement. The painting with a clear ascending direction links the earth with the sky. The artist breaks with the traditional perspective and turns the space into something weightless and intangible. All this combined with a contrast of intense colors, a strong and unreal light and vibrant brushstrokes, which show an image of great expressive and spiritual power.

On the reverse (common to the three pieces), the logo of the Bicentennial of the Prado Museum is reproduced together with an image of the seated statue of Velázquez, made by Aniceto Marinas in 1899 and located in front of the Velázquez Gate of the National Museum of the Prado, of Madrid; under the sculpture appear the dates 1819-2019. In the upper part of the coin, horizontally and in capital letters, the legend SPAIN. In the lower part of the coin, horizontally and in capital letters, the value of the 10 EURO coin and the mint mark; below, horizontally and in capital letters, the legend BICENTENARIO DEL PRADO.
