Like its predecessor, the coin has a face value of 5 euros. However, its circulation has increased significantly, from 15,000 pieces in 2024 to 20,000 in this edition. The Peregrine Falcon's Link to Malta

The link between the peregrine falcon and Malta has historical and cultural roots dating back to the time of the Order of the Knights of St. John, also known as the Knights of Malta. This link is mainly related to a symbolic tribute and a connection with the emblematic fauna of the island.

In 1530, Emperor Charles V granted the Order of St. John control of Malta in exchange for a symbolic annual tribute: a peregrine falcon. This falcon was to be given to the Viceroy of Sicily as a token of loyalty and gratitude for the cession of the islands.

The peregrine falcon was a prized bird in falconry, a practice highly valued among European nobility. It represented power, nobility and skill, qualities that were also associated with knights.

This historical connection inspired works such as The Maltese Falcon (1930), a novel by Dashiell Hammett that was later made into a famous film starring Humphrey Bogart. Although the link to Malta in the novel is fictional, the idea of a falcon as a symbol of courage and legacy has roots in the island's history.

Malta, as a strategic point on bird migration routes, is a place where peregrine falcons and other birds of prey can be observed during certain times of the year. Currently, the protection of these birds is an important issue in Malta, due to hunting pressure and other environmental threats.

The peregrine falcon remains a symbol of Malta's rich history and heritage as a crossroads of cultures and traditions. Although the tribute ceased to be paid centuries ago, the figure of the falcon remains an emblem of the island's historical importance in the Mediterranean.
