Carol I 50 Bani 1901 MS64 PCGS, Hamburg mint, KM23, Schäffer/Stambuliu-51. A significantly lustrous near-Gem example of this scarce one-year issued produced in Germany. The toning is quite unique featuring a mix of colors including olive-yellow, royal blue, and light peach. Towards the top of the condition census at both major TPG's.

4. Carol I silver Specimen Pattern Leu 1869 SP64 PCGS, Heaton mint

Carol I silver Specimen Pattern Leu 1869 SP64 PCGS, Heaton mint, KM-Pn23, Schäffer/Stambuliu-12.1.1. Few Patterns of the Romanian series can claim to match the level of aesthetic quality seen here, a clear product of the skilled hands of the Wyon family. Every details rises in clear contrast against watery, pastel-patinated recesses; the reverse faces up especially fine when viewed in-hand. While those struck in other metals are seen at market with greater regularity, examples in silver are witnessed maybe once or twice a decade, and the last of any metal our firm has handled dates back to 2017. Only two specimens are currently certified by either service, this and a lesser PR62, and as such, we anticipate an elevated collector interest for one of just a few struck in silver currently in private hands when crossing the auction block.

5. Carol I Leu 1870-C MS67 PCGS, Bucharest mint

Sole Finest 1870 Leu

Carol I Leu 1870-C MS67 PCGS, Bucharest mint, KM6, Schäffer/Stambuliu-5. Coin alignment. A prize among collectors, not only as an elusive type, but as the sole finest for this key and one of just a handful of this denomination to attain an MS67 assignment. Virtually pristine and awash in cascading luster that finds itself lightly tempered by a gentle pewter patination, the example bests our McFadden specimen sold in 2014, an MS65 that garnered an impressive sum of $7,050. Displaying laudable boldness and a thick satin sheen owed to a firm strike, the piece on offer is devoid of any singularly significant instance of visual detractor, and demands the attention of only the most quality-conscious collector when crossing the auction block.

6. Carol I Leu 1873 MS63 PCGS, Brussels mint

Carol I Leu 1873 MS63 PCGS, Brussels mint, KM10, Schäffer/Stambuliu-9. A decidedly coveted issue in Choice Mint State and above, this example with moderate, mottled patination still manages to display slightly Proof-like brilliance shining from the fields. The reverse also boasts significant vertical die-polish evidence.

8. Carol I Leu 1876-(b) AU53 PCGS, Brussels mint

Carol I Leu 1876-(b) AU53 PCGS, Brussels mint, KM10, Schäffer/Stambuliu-14. Hardly ever encountered, even at lower AU levels, this is the uncontested key date in the series. Looking internationally, the last few to come to market were problem pieces, so this wholesome issue should release pent-up demand for a fresh and original example that bests even those in major collections and institutions.

9. Carol I Leu 1881-V MS66 PCGS, Vienna mint

Carol I Leu 1881-V MS66 PCGS, Vienna mint, KM14, Schäffer/Stambuliu-21. One-year type that is practically impossible to source in Gem status. Displaying some mottled pomegranate and grape tone alongside fervent luster. A single example ranks higher at NGC out of over 80 specimens currently graded at the major certification companies.

10. Carol I Leu 1884-B MS63 Prooflike PCGS, Bucharest mint

Carol I Leu 1884-B MS63 Prooflike PCGS, Bucharest mint, KM22, Schäffer/Stambuliu-33. Practically unheard of with such a powerful level of mint-made brilliance, this is the sole 1884 Leu to be certified as Prooflike at either NGC or PCGS. The amount of flash emanating from the icy expanses on each side is extremely impressive, as is the pin-point detail on the frosted central design motifs. Possibly the only extant example worldwide of an 1884 Leu with decidedly Prooflike characteristics, we foresee spirited bidding for a chance to own such a unique piece.
