Câteva monede românești într-o licitație Heritage Auction XXII b - 11.01.2025

 1. Carol I Proof 5 Lei 1901-B

Carol I Proof 5 Lei 1901-B PR63 PCGS, KM17.2, Stamb-54. A coveted Romanian rarity, far scarcer than the standard strike of this one-year type and the first time our firm has had the opportunity to bring an example to auction. The choice designation attests to the careful maintenance of the firm strike, all the devices fully rendered and displaying minimal rub. The expanses flicker with polychromatic fluorescence when rotated in hand, an effect paralleled at the highpoints but to a more subdued extent. With only two examples certified across PCGS and NGC, this being the better of the two, and seemingly no locatable examples auctioned in recent memory, this particular offering deserves extra consideration amongst collectors of Romanian numismatics.

Ex. CBG Numismatique Paris Auction (September 2022, Lot 575)

2. Carol I gold Specimen "Ministry of Public Relations - Palace Inauguration" Medal 1910

Expansive Gold Medal of Carol I

Carol I gold Specimen "Ministry of Public Relations - Palace Inauguration" Medal 1910 SP63 PCGS, Forrer-V.5, pg. 94, 276.19gm. 70mm. By J. Resch. Struck in celebration of the completion of Bucharest's Palace of the Ministry of Public Works. Few contemporary Medals can claim to match the level of aesthetic quality seen on the offering at hand, providing instant verification of additional care and attention to detail that accompanied this piece's product. Rendered in immense relief and fine perspective, each engraved detail practically leaps towards the viewer while a commendable heft is immediately recognized when in-hand. While mint brilliance abounds this decidedly Choice representative, a handful of obverse wisps likely preclude an even loftier designation. Regardless, this specimen appears to be the only example seen at market in the last two decades, and its scarcity likely confirms its purpose of presentation to a notable attendant of the inauguration.

3. Carol II gold "Jubilee" 100 Lei 1940-C MS61 NGC, Bucharest mint

Storied Romanian "Jubilee" Commemorative

Carol II gold "Jubilee" 100 Lei 1940-C MS61 NGC, Bucharest mint, KM-XM12, Fr-19, Stamb-111. By E. W. Becker. Uncircled bust variety. Coin alignment. Reeded edge. A recognizable issue within the 20th-century Romanian gold series, struck to commemorate the first decade of Carol II's reign. His effigy serves as the focal point for the obverse, paired with a stylized amalgam of regal symbols on the reverse, all subject to some mild distraction due to the handling marks quite typical for the issue. Tied with the Paramount specimen and bested by just two examples across grading companies, a fine acquisition for advanced collectors of Romanian numismatics.

Metal: Gold Diameter: 35mm Weight: 32.5g AGW: 0.9404oz

4. Ferdinand I gold 100 Lei 1922-Dated MS61 NGC, London mint

Ferdinand I gold 100 Lei 1922-Dated MS61 NGC, London mint, KM-XM4, Fr-9, Schaffer/Stamb-85. Dated 1922, but struck posthumously in 1928 and 1929 following a 1927 decree to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the King's coronation. An appreciable Mint State example of this coveted low-mintage gold issue, displaying moderate abrasions commensurate with the grade but also lovely satin-laced apricot mint bloom.

5. Carol I lead Specimen Pattern Leu 1910

Carol I lead Specimen Pattern Leu 1910 SP63 PCGS, KM-Pn163, Stamb-68-1.1. A representative that admits few flaws even to the scrupulous eye and demands the attention of the Romanian specialist, whose general paucity at auction in lead is a testament to the coin's overall rarity.

6. Carol I lead Specimen Pattern 2 Lei 1910

Carol I lead Specimen Pattern 2 Lei 1910 SP65 PCGS, KM-Pn171, Stamb-69-1.12. Another curious striking in lead, showcasing obverse and reverse designs best appreciated under illumination, catching swirling arms of luster as they highlight the finely engraved devices. Nary an imperfection is witnessed throughout, a feat on its own when considering the softness of lead, and a contender for the Romanian collector.

7. Carol I silver Specimen Pattern 12-1/2 Lei 1906

Carol I silver Specimen Pattern 12-1/2 Lei 1906 SP62 PCGS, KM-Pn120, Stamb-60-1.3. An exciting rendition from the coveted Pattern series of 1906, struck off-metal in silver and displaying the highly coveted designs that would carry the production issues in gold to their current desirability. Certified just shy of Choice and the only witnessed by PCGS, the piece expresses an attractive cabinet patina that elevates the overall aesthetic prowess that will ultimately catapult this into an advanced collection.

8. Carol I gold 12-1/2 Lei 1906 MS61 NGC, Brussels mint

Carol I gold 12-1/2 Lei 1906 MS61 NGC, Brussels mint, KM36, Fr-8. A scarce Mint State representative of this one-year type with such an unusual denomination. Though the design is rather low-relief in appearance, the detail on each central motif is pleasantly crisp and intricate. A delicate layer of frost glistens atop the satiny yellow-gold surfaces. Quite free of distractions for a selection at this grade-level.

Carol I gold 20 Lei 1870-C AU55 PCGS, Bucharest mint, KM7, Fr-2. Mintage: 5,000. An infrequently encountered one-year type that becomes very difficult to source in Mint State. Evincing moderate wear across the bust but maintaining much detail to the reverse wreath motif, all expressed through a strong saffron tone.
