3. Johann I Zapolya (1526-1540) gold Goldgulden 1540-FG UNC Details (Cleaned) NGC, Klausenburg mint

Johann I Zapolya (1526-1540) gold Goldgulden 1540-FG UNC Details (Cleaned) NGC, Klausenburg mint, Fr-42, Pohl N9, Huszar-871, Lengyel 157/1/1540. This superlative example is fully struck and comes to us in decidedly favorable condition despite an old cleaning that has muted some of the original luster. John Zápolya, a Hungarian commoner crowned with St. Stephen's diadem, reluctantly allied with the Ottomans to fend off Habsburg ambitions following the bloodbath at Mohács. Sensing an opportunity, Zápolya betrayed the Sultan and turned his sword on the Ottomans. Following Zápolya's death in 1540, the Hungarian kingdom was partitioned in three, including an eastern part-Transylvania-governed by Zápolya's infant son, John II Sigismund (1540-1571).
