Few natural experiences are as extraordinary as the sight of the piercing golden-yellow eyes of an owl staring through utter darkness. This sensation comes to life in "The Wisdom of the Owl", the second coin in the five-piece series "The Eyes of the World", which with the help of sparkling Swarovski crystals enhance the mythical beauty of this animal.
Despite this night hunter's ability to turn his massive head up to 270 degrees, the omniscient serenity he projects while standing motionless on a branch is strangely reminiscent of elderly members of our own species. Maybe that's why humans have always recognized each other in the owl. The light of wisdom seems to shine in the bird's eyes, to the point where it was believed that the owl produced light by itself, its eyes are like round windows that magically illuminate the darkness. The equating of light with wisdom comes from the Western worldview, which since time immemorial has cast the light of reason in a fight against the forces of darkness.
The reverse of the coin is dominated by the stylized face of an eagle owl displaying eyes formed by two polished golden yellow Swarovski crystals.
The obverse of the coin shows a barn owl on a branch, from which it looks down patiently and persistently in search of its prey. The bird is surrounded by decorations reminiscent of ancient Greek ornaments.
