We are going to reveal the motif and design to which the national-type commemorative 2-euro coin that Portugal will issue in 2022 will be dedicated, a coin that joins the common commemorative of 2022 that will celebrate the "35th Anniversary of the Erasmus Program" and that our neighbors have also confirmed.
The theme selected and that will be represented on a commemorative 2 euro coin next year is to celebrate the "Centennial of the First South Atlantic Air Crossing", carried out between March 30 and June 17, 1922 by the aviators Carlos Viegas Gago Coutinho and Artur de Sacadura Freire Cabral from Portugal.
The national side of the coin features the representation of one of the three Faire III biplanes that were used to make the flight between Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro. The inscription "TRAVESIA DO ATLANTICO SUL" appears under the plane. The legend "PORTUGAL 1922-2022", the mint mark of the "CASA DA MOEDA" and the name of the designer "JJ Brito" complete the composition.
We also have the official information on the issue volume, which will be 1,000,000 pieces. 885,000 will be distributed in rolls of 25 coins intended for circulation, in addition to 7,500 in BU quality and another 7,500 in Proof quality, in the usual presentations each year for this type of coin.
The expected issue date is March 2022.
