Under the name of American Innovation, a series of one-dollar coins has been issued by the United States Mint since 2018 with which it is intended to honor innovation and innovators linked to each of the 50 states that make up the country, the District of Columbia and the five United States territories: Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the United States Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Four new coins with distinctive designs will be issued each year through 2032, in the order in which the states ratified the United States Constitution or were admitted to the Union. Once a coin is issued for each state, the coins will be issued for the District of Columbia and the territories.

The sketches of the four coins corresponding to 2022 dedicated to the States of Rhode Island, Vermont, Kentucky and Tennessee are already known. Coins that will be issued in this order during the next year.

Rhode Island

The American Innovation coin, representing Rhode Island, recognizes naval architect Nathanael Herreshoff's famous yacht Reliance, which incorporated numerous technical innovations when it was built in 1891.

The design represents Nathanael Herreshoff's famous Reliance yacht at full speed in the waters surrounding Rhode Island. The design is bordered by a rope that evokes this nautical scene.

Vermont

The American Innovation 1 dollar coin representing Vermont recognizes the invention of the Snowboard.

The design shows a young snowboarder in the air performing a trick called a "melon grab," with a mountainous winter horizon inspired by the Vermont landscape. The goal of the design is to capture the sense of energy and exuberance of snowboarding through the movement implicit in the diagonal lines and curved shapes.

Kentucky

The Kentucky coin recognizes the invention of bluegrass music. Bluegrass has its roots in traditional English, Scottish and Irish ballads and dance tunes, as well as traditional African American blues and jazz. The genre derives its name from the band "Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys", which has been dubbed the "Original Bluegrass Band". Bluegrass historians point to Bill Monroe's first sessions at Columbia in 1946 as the advent of bluegrass music as it is known today.

The design features a banjo, an important bluegrass instrument. It is tilted to one side, alluding to the rhythm and movement of the music.

Tennessee

The currency representing Tennessee recognizes the formation of the Tennessee Valley Authority. In 1933, Congress created the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to build transmission lines to serve "farms and small villages that are not otherwise supplied with electricity at reasonable prices." In the mid-1930s, nine out of ten rural households lacked electricity.

The design of the coin depicts a farm in Tennessee with newly installed power lines lining the road.

Common obverse

Designed by Justin Kunz and engraved by Phebe Hemphill, the obverse features the same design common to the entire series, featuring the image of the Statue of Liberty in profile and the inscriptions "$ 1" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" (IN GOD WE TRUST).
