Once the series of Supersaurus coins, which the Austrian Mint has been issuing, today, November 9, a new collection called "Luminous Marine Life" begins, which continues the saga of colored coins that glow in the dark. .

To celebrate the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, proclaimed by the UN between 2021 to 2030, we embark on an underwater adventure that will show how fascinating and colorful the underwater world can be. With a circulation of 65,000 pieces each, the twelve innovative 3 Euro facial color coins, of which four will be issued per year for 3 years, will not only make our eyes light up, but the coins will by themselves thanks to special lighting effects.

Luminous Marine Life

As unlikely and magical as the sea creatures appearing on coins may seem, they really do exist. Although some of them live in the perpetual darkness of the deep sea, where no sunlight penetrates, they all have extraordinary luminous qualities. They blink, shimmer, shimmer and change color when needed.

The same goes for the coins themselves, which glow when exposed to ultraviolet light in such a spectacular way that they arouse our sense of scientific curiosity. A UV flashlight will help us fully experience the enchanting creatures of Luminous Sea Life.

Ultraviolet light effects

The series' UV flashlight emits a special type of light that seems to bring to life the underwater creatures on the coins, which change color and glow brightly. The tiny creatures, which only become visible when illuminated by ultraviolet light, also appear here and there alongside the series' main characters, adding an element of surprise.

On some of the 12 coins, only the edge of a porthole is visible, beyond which there is only emptiness and darkness. Coins in which nothing is seen? Is it a joke in bad taste? Not at all, when shining the light beam of the special flashlight on the coins we will be surprised.

Blue Ringed Octopus

The blue-ringed octopus is a shining example of how fascinating and colorful the underwater world can be. This amazing animal, one of the most intelligent invertebrates, is not only intelligent, but also very toxic. If he feels threatened, his rings light up several times a second. This is exactly what he does in the first coin in the series.

The 12 magical sea creatures in the series will appear as a silhouette on the obverse of all coins in the series. Air bubbles between them and a tail fin disappears under the waves to the right. The reverse of the coin features a blue-ringed octopus printed in color. When the octopus is illuminated with ultraviolet light, its blue rings begin to glow and its body changes color from yellow-brown to green. Two angelfish swim in the background. A wide band, reminiscent of an old porthole, frames the aquatic scene. As in all the coins of the series, to the left and below the octopus, to the right, a shell and a starfish can be seen.

Series accessories

To fully enjoy this series, we must have an ultraviolet flashlight that is also sold by the Austrian mint, or much cheaper, we can find it in a nearby bazaar. Optional, it is to acquire the book where the complete collection of coins can be kept.

As you can see, this is a very interesting series of coins, if you are going to do it, as I always say, it is important to secure the first of the series, which in the long run is usually the most difficult to obtain.

An ideal collection to introduce children to numismatics.

For its acquisition I recommend the numismatic stores that are advertised here.
