If someone had told us three years ago about messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines, we probably wouldn't know exactly what they were talking about. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 virus has made us familiar with a multitude of new terms and words that to date only researchers, scientists and health professionals use more or less regularly. Now, thanks to numismatics and the peculiar currency issued by Hungary, we are going to learn more about messenger RNA vaccines and some of the researchers who were the forerunners of this great scientific advance that has saved so many lives.
The Bank of Hungary (Magyar Nemzeti Bank) has issued two collector coins, one in silver with a face value of 15,000 forints and its version in cupro-nickel with a face value of 3,000 forints under the name “The Hungarian invention that laid the foundations for vaccines of mRNA”, to honor the results achieved by the scientists who participated in the research and their perseverance. Designed by artist András Szilos, these square coins, oriented like a rhombus, present the essence of the invention, listing the Hungarian, American and Canadian scientists who played a key role in the research.
Co-developed by several researchers, messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines, aimed at combating COVID-19 infection, played a crucial role in protecting against the SARS-CoV-2 virus and containing the global pandemic that broke out in 2020. Two Hungarian scientists stand out from the rest: Katalin Karikó and Norbert Pardi. Thanks to the efforts of Ms. Karikó, the injection of the mRNA molecule into the human body became safe, and by putting the mRNA into fat molecules, Mr. Pardi eliminated its instability by making the injection of mRNA into cells were effective.
From research over the last few decades, it became clear that synthetically produced mRNA, encoding viral proteins, injected into the human body could offer protection against a variety of viral infections. Using the mRNA, the cells produce the necessary section of the virus protein that could potentially cause problems within the human body, and in response, our immune system begins to produce antibodies (and often other special immune cells) that enable the body to fight off the virus. virus. The cells of the human body regard the mRNA molecules, which code for viral proteins, as foreign material; however, as a result of the modifications, the mRNA molecules can safely and effectively complete their therapeutic tasks.
This success lays the foundation for future development of mRNA vaccines for pathogens such as influenza viruses, herpesviruses and HIV. In addition, several new applications will appear through the use of mRNA-based medicine, for example, the treatment of incurable diseases with gene editing therapy or the development of a cancer vaccine. The development and testing of the two key elements of the vaccine platform – modified nucleoside mRNA and a carrier lipid nanoparticle – is the result of decades of research.

A nucleoside-modified mRNA lipid nanoparticle forms the core motif of the reverse, which is a fatty particle that includes the modified mRNA coils. The mRNA coils are amplified and positioned next to the fat particle. The essence of this invention is to safely inject therapeutic mRNA into the human body, so that it can perform its tasks efficiently. Therefore, the RNA is packaged in a fat particle also known as a lipid nanoparticle. Below, on two lines, is the inscription “nukleozid-módosított mRNS lipid nanopartikula” (nucleoside-modified mRNA lipid nanoparticle). Below the inscription is a stylized representation of an mRNA spiral bearing the mark of artist András Szilos, the coin's designer.
Separated by a dot, clockwise, the names of scientists who have played a key role in mRNA-based vaccine research appear on the edge of the coin: "KARIKÓ KATALIN", "IAN MACLACHLAN », «PARDI NORBERT», «DREW WEISSMAN».
