Molarii mamuților aveau o structură complexă fiind compuși din mai multe lamele sau plăci de dentină, înconjurate de smalț. Aceste plăci nu intră în contact direct una cu cealaltă, ci ele sunt ținute împreună de o matrice de ciment. Mai multe astfel de plăci lipite formează un dinte, numărul plăcilor variind în funcție de vârstă și de specie. Această dentiție era perfect adaptată unui consum mare de ierburi, plante erbacee, plante cu flori, arbuști, mușchi. Un adult de 6 tone ar fi trebuit să mănânce în jur de 180 kg pe zi. Mamutul cu blană (Mammuthus primigenius) se folosea de asemenea și de trompă pentru a culege frunze și ramuri din copaci și arbuști dar și pentru a smulge ierburi scurte, muguri și flori.

Mammoth molars had a complex structure, consisting of several lamellae, or dentin plates, surrounded by enamel. These lamellae do not come into direct contact with one another, but are held together by a cement matrix. A tooth is made up of several such dentin plates, the number of which varies depending on the age and the species. This dentition was perfectly adapted to a high consumption of grasses, herbaceous plants, flowering plants, shrubs, and mosses. A 6-ton adult mammoth should have consumed about 180 kg of food per day. The woolly mammoth used its trunk to pick leaves and branches from trees and bushes, as well as short grass, buds, and flowers.
