In November 2019, during the 40th session of the UNESCO General Conference, it was decided to proclaim May 5 of each year as “World Day for the Portuguese Language”. The chosen date coincides with that set in the 2009 resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), which instituted May 5 as the day of Portuguese language and culture in the CPLP.
The Portuguese language is not only one of the most widespread languages in the world, more than 265 million people spread across the five continents use it, but it is also the most widely spoken language in the southern hemisphere. Portuguese continues to be, today, one of the main languages of international communication, and a language with a strong geographical extension, destined to continue growing.
This year the World Day of the Portuguese Language was celebrated for the first time. Due to the health crisis in the world and also in Portugal, this day has gone largely unnoticed. The Portuguese Mint INCM will give you recognition by issuing two coins with the same design tomorrow, June 30.
