The German Ministry of Finance has presented the sketch of the coin to be issued in September 2021 belonging to the series started in 2017 "Climate zones of the Earth". The coin dedicated to the Polar Zone will be the fifth and last in the series. The piece in which a translucent polymer is used as part of it, this time in violet, will show, as usual, a different hue of this color in the coins minted by each of the five German mint.
Artist Natalie Tekampe's artwork design shows polar space from an unusual underwater perspective. The imaginative power of the composition creates the translucency of the deep blue of the ocean, the white glow of the ice shelf and the muted anthracite of the rocky massifs of the polar regions. Monumentality is achieved through the iceberg in the foreground to the right of the image. The design requires only three different elements to generate the image of the inhospitable polar regions. The leopard seal plunges into the foreground before the circular polymer ring in the silence and expanse of the ocean. The iceberg only shows its tip and hides its mass under the surface of the water. The land mass with the glacier in front delimits the space of the coin in the depth of the image.
On the obverse there is an eagle, the German words "Federal Republic of Germany", the face value "5 euro", the year "2021", the twelve European stars and, depending on the mint, the brand of the House of Currency "A" (Berlin), "D" (Munich), "F" (Stuttgart), "G" (Karlsruhe) or "J" (Hamburg).

The 5 euro coin "Polar Zone" is made up of two different copper-nickel alloys and a violet translucent polymer ring. It has a weight of 9 grams and is produced in two coining qualities, BU and Proof.
The coin in BU quality will be offered for sale at its nominal value (5 euros) at the Federal Banks of Germany. The coin with the Proof finish will go on sale for a higher price, yet to be determined.
