The prehistoric giant featured on the third coin in the Supersaurus series is the largest flying animal to ever dominate the skies. Arambourgiania philadelphiae was a huge pterosaur from the Azhdarchidae family that lived during the late Cretaceous. With a beak like that of a pelican, a neck like that of a giraffe, wings like those of a giant bat, and a crest like a Mohawk haircut, this extraordinary pterosaur comes to life with this coin, third in the series « Supersaurs »issued by the Austrian Mint Münze Österreich.
Short-tailed flying reptiles became extinct in the late Cretaceous period about 66 million years ago, the Arambourgiania were huge creatures. The researchers estimate that the largest species had a neck 3 meters long, a wingspan of 13 meters and a height of 5 meters. They are the first vertebrates known to have evolved in powered flight. Despite the fact that they are often mistakenly called "flying dinosaurs," pterosaurs are not dinosaurs, although they are related to them.
On the coin you can see a full-color Arambourgiania in flight. In the background another Arambourgiania is shown in its prehistoric habitat.
This coin and all of the series have the peculiarity that they have been colored with special inks that make the silhouette of the animal represented in the piece glow in the dark. The Austrian Mint has officially issued this third piece in the series on June 10.
