To commemorate the 250th anniversary of Therese Brunsvik's birth and honor her achievements in Hungarian education, the Hungarian National Bank issued a commemorative coin on July 28 in two versions: one minted in silver with a face value of 20,000 forints, and another version made of cupronickel with a face value of 3,000 forints. The coin was designed by artist Andrea Horváth.
Therese Brunsvik was born in 1775 into a noble and aristocratic family. One of the most cultured women of her time, she was one of the first in the world to emphasize the importance of early childhood education. In 1828, in the family home on Mikó Street in Buda, she opened the first "institute for child care and protection," the first kindergarten not only in Hungary but also in Central Europe. Thanks to her work, the first institution, which she ran with excellent pedagogical expertise, was soon followed by many other nurseries in Pest-Buda and the surrounding countryside, and the first nurseries in Austria and southern Germany also opened their doors under her influence and with her help.
The Hungarian founder of daycare centers created nearly 100 institutions and was actively involved in developing an educational program to help girls become conscious mothers. Her public commitment and tireless work have made her one of the most influential educators.
The obverse depicts a 19th-century nursery activity, showing a nursery teacher—who at that time was dedicated exclusively to education—and a group of nursery children of different ages, typical of the era. On the left edge of the obverse, the face value is inscribed in two lines; above this, in a semicircle, is the inscription of the issuing country "MAGYARORSZÁG" (HUNGARY). In the lower center of the design, the year of issue "2025" and the mintmark "BP" (Budapest) are shown.
The reverse features a half-length portrait of Therese Brunsvik, inspired by an 1859 drawing by Miklós Barabás. In the background on the right, a detail of Brunsvik House on Mikó Street in Buda, which housed Hungary's first kindergarten, is shown, based on a 1915 painting by the artist Gergely Pörge. Above the illustration, a well-known quote by Therese Brunsvik appears handwritten in three lines: "Education shapes the individual, and the individual shapes the nation." At the top of the arched composition, the inscription "BRUNSZVIK TERÉZ" (THERESE BRUNSVIK) appears, along with the years "1775–1861," indicating the years of birth and death of the kindergarten's founder. The coin's designer, Andrea Horváth, also features the mark in the lower right corner of the design.
