The old city of Salamanca, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988, is the setting for this imposing Dominican complex. The convent, whose construction began after the destruction of the old church of San Juan el Blanco by a flooding of the Tormes River in 1256, is today a benchmark of the Plateresque style, although its construction ranges from late Gothic to Baroque.
