Tomorrow, July 29, 2025, the United States Mint will issue the twenty-ninth American Innovation one-dollar coin , honoring the state of Texas. This commemorative piece pays tribute to the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, the primary site of NASA's human spaceflight operations and home to the iconic Mission Control Center.

About the Johnson Space Center

The Johnson Space Center (JSC) is a cornerstone of American space exploration. Opened in 1961, it has been the hub for numerous historic missions, including Apollo 11, which landed the first human on the moon. Today, it continues to lead the development of technologies for human missions, train astronauts, and manage operations onboard the International Space Station. Its legacy symbolizes the innovative capacity, scientific leadership, and pioneering spirit of the state of Texas and the nation.

The Coin

The reverse design of the Texas one-dollar commemorative coin, part of the American Innovation series , depicts an American astronaut performing a spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS). This powerful image symbolizes the critical role that the Johnson Space Center—and in particular its iconic Mission Control Center in Houston—plays in the success of NASA's human space program.

The scene illustrates the culmination of the financial, technical, logistical, and intellectual support this center provides for space missions. It not only represents its leadership in the national aerospace field, but also its ongoing contribution to international cooperation in space. The Houston Mission Control Center has been key in coordinating astronauts from multiple countries working on the ISS, reflecting the collaborative and global spirit of modern space exploration.

The design incorporates the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "TEXAS," highlighting both national identity and state pride in its participation in one of the most iconic achievements in contemporary science and technology.

Designed by Justin Kunz and engraved by Phebe Hemphill, the obverse features the same design common to the entire series, featuring the image of the Statue of Liberty in profile and the inscriptions "$1" and "IN GOD WE TRUST."

The coins in this series show the year of minting or issue, the mint mark and the text “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (out of many, one) on the edge of the coins.
