On July 11, the Bank of the Republic of Colombia issued a commemorative 20,000-peso coin in honor of the quincentennial of the founding of Santa Marta, the oldest city in the country still in existence. This coin not only celebrates the 500-year history of one of the most emblematic cities in the Colombian Caribbean, but also highlights its cultural, historical, and geographical significance.

Santa Marta: the oldest city in Colombia

Founded on July 29, 1525, by the Spanish conquistador Rodrigo de Bastidas, Santa Marta is recognized as the oldest city in Colombia, still standing since the colonial era. Located on the country's northern coast, on the shores of the Caribbean Sea and at the foot of the majestic Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, this city has witnessed key events in Colombian and Latin American history.

Its strategic location made it a key point during the colonial period, both for the exploration of the continent's interior and for maritime trade. It is also the place where the Liberator Simón Bolívar died in 1830, at the historic San Pedro Alejandrino hacienda, now a museum and national memorial site.

Santa Marta is also a symbol of geographic and cultural diversity. Its territory is home to paradisiacal beaches, mangrove ecosystems, deserts, and snow-capped mountains. The Sierra Nevada, the ancestral home of the Kogui, Arhuaco, Wiwa, and Kankuamo indigenous peoples, is recognized as a sacred territory and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Today, Santa Marta stands out for its tourist, archaeological, and ecological wealth. Places like Tayrona National Natural Park, the Lost City (Teyuna), and the colonial historic center attract thousands of national and international visitors each year. Furthermore, the city is a cultural landmark of the Colombian Caribbean, with artistic, culinary, and musical experiences that reflect its blend of indigenous, African, and European roots.

The obverse of the coin depicts the Customs House, one of Santa Marta's most emblematic buildings. Built by brothers Domingo and Nicolás Jimeno around 1730, it has had multiple uses in its nearly 300-year history. Also included is an image of El Morro islet with its lighthouse, located in the bay, opposite the city. At the top is a border with a geometric pattern and the legend "500 years of the founding of Santa Marta." In the center is the inscription "Customs House Santa Marta," and at the bottom, concentrically, the commemoration period "1525-2025."

The reverse features a pectoral from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, a representative element of the region's goldsmithing. Above the figure is the text "PECTORAL NEHUANGE." The upper part features the coin's face value, "VEINTE MIL PESOS," a border with a geometric pattern, and a latent image as a security feature that, depending on the angle from which it is viewed, reflects either the initials "BR" or the Arabic numeral "20." The lower part also features the name of the issuing country, "REPÚBLICA DE COLOMBIA," and the year of issue, "2025."
