On March 27, the Greek Mint unveiled a new addition to its "Philhellenes" series: a 10-euro silver commemorative coin honoring Count Santorre di Santarosa, a key figure in the history of Greek independence.

Count Santorre di Santarosa (1783-1825) was a military man and politician from Piedmont, Italy, and a fervent patriot who fought numerous battles for Piedmont's independence from Napoleonic France. An advocate of Italian unification, he was inspired by liberal-democratic ideas that led him into conflict with autocratic regimes; he joined the Carbonari and, in 1821, played a prominent role in a constitutional movement in Piedmont. After the revolt failed, he was arrested but escaped and reached Great Britain, where he came into contact with the Philhellenic Committee in London.

Deeply moved by the Greek struggle for freedom, he decided to travel to Greece in 1824, where he joined the Greek army as a private under the alias "Derossi." In 1825, Santarosa participated in the Pylos campaign against Ibrahim, landing on the island of Sphacteria on May 7. In the battle that took place the following day, he fought heroically and died, along with many others.

The obverse of the coin features a profile image of Santore di Santarosa, accompanied by inscriptions on both sides: the Greek mint mark on the left and the year of issue "2025" on the right. Framing the central composition are the count's first and last names at the top, while below, they are in Greek, along with the years he lived "1783-1825."

Finally, the reverse of the coin features, in the center, the Greek coat of arms framed by the inscription "ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ" (HELLENIC REPUBLIC), which is in turn surrounded by the colorful flags of Italy and Greece interconnected by semicircles. On the outer edge appears the quote by the English poet Percy Bysshe: "WE ARE ALL GREEKS", and above it the face value "10 ΕΥΡΩ" (10 EUROS).
