The Bank of Lithuania is preparing to issue a new commemorative 2 euro coin on 25 September, entitled “Straw Gardens in Lithuania”, a motif dedicated to the one that was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2023 under the name “Manufacturing of sodai, decorative straw ornaments in Lithuania”.
The national side of the coin depicts a stylised straw garden made up of geometric shapes of various sizes, with one spike pointing upwards (towards the sky) and the other downwards (towards the underworld). It also features the inscription “LIETUVA” (LITHUANIA), the year of issue (2024), the mint mark of the Lithuanian Mint and the twelve stars of the EU.
The edge of the coin, like all those issued by Lithuania in this value, bears the legends: LAISVĖ * VIENYBĖ * GEROVĖ * (FREEDOM * UNITY * WELL-BEING *).
The issue volume is 500,000 coins, of which 5,000 are BU quality and are presented in coin cards.
