On June 18, the Czech National Bank issued a new coin in the five-piece series “Famous Means of Transport.” The newly issued 500-crown silver coin is dedicated to the iconic ČKD Tatra T3 tram, which has been widely used, especially on the tram networks of the Eastern bloc.
The iconic tram was built in 1960 as a prototype. Serial production and regular operation began two years later at the Tatra Smíchov plant, which became part of ČKD Prague from 1963. Characteristic elements of the T3 tram include the PCC chassis, which was the key structural node of the tram, as well as the body construction with a shape solution designed by artist František Kardaus and the typical laminated seats by artist Miroslav Navrátil, which were first used in 1964. In total, almost 14,000 T3 trams were built.
The reverse of the coin features an oblique view of the ČKD Tatra T3 tram with overhead cables and rails. This design is illustrated with a simplified colour scheme of the tram using partial yellow and red gold plating. The lower edge of the design contains the inscription “ČKD TATRA T3”, and above, on the right, the year of issue “2024” and below it the initials of the coin designer “F” and “Z” (Zbyněk Fojtů).
The obverse of the coin shows a composition of a side and front view of a ČKD Tatra T3 tram at the top, while the lower part of the design shows a detail of a section of the chassis. The coin also features the inscriptions of the issuing country “ČESKÁ REPUBLIKA” (CZECH REPUBLIC), on the right edge the mark of the Czech Mint, consisting of the letters “Č” and “M”, and lower down in the centre the face value “500 Kč”.
