On November 30, Swissmint, the Swiss Mint, issued a new 25-franc gold coin under the name "Swiss linguistic diversity." This piece has been minted to celebrate one of the most distinctive characteristics of Switzerland: multilingualism, since the territory has no less than four official languages, German, French, Italian and Romansh.
The obverse of the coin represents the four linguistic regions. From left to right, French Switzerland, German Switzerland, Italian Switzerland and then Romansh Switzerland. These four linguistic regions are cleverly combined to form an overview: 4 languages, 4 regions, one Switzerland. The name of the coin "Varietad Linguistica" comes from Romansh (Rumantsch Grischun, "standard" Romansh) and is a tribute to section 5 of article 70 of the Federal Constitution: "The Confederation will support the measures of the cantons of Grisons and Ticino to preserve and promote Romansh and Italian languages.
While the reverse of the piece has four speech bubbles, one for each linguistic region. They form a Swiss cross, a symbol of unity in the Swiss Confederation. The four speech bubbles contain quotes from article 70 of the Federal Constitution. In German, section 3, which lays the foundations for the promotion of multilingualism; in French, section 4, which guarantees federal support for multilingual cantons; and in Italian and Romansh, section 5, which guarantees federal support to the cantons of Graubünden and Ticino for the preservation and promotion of the Romansh and Italian languages. Also appearing, clockwise, are the inscriptions “CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA”, the year of issue “2023” and the face value “25 FR”.
