The Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR) has issued a new commemorative bimetallic coin of 500 colones (0.87 euros) in versions intended for circulation and collection, with which it wants to highlight the 75 years of the Abolition of the Costa Rican Army , a date that occurred on December 1 after the end of the civil war of 1948.
The Abolition of the Army is a historical event that marked a milestone in the political trajectory of Costa Rican society, it is an anniversary of deep meaning for its people and an
international example of peace and democracy. The budget that was previously allocated to the army is now allocated to security, education and culture. The country maintains the Costa Rican Public Force, which performs Police and Border Guard functions.
The design of the obverse of the coin is the same for the collector coin and the circulation coin. The difference is that the first one has some color notes and is on sale.
On the reverse of the coin the design of the commemoration of the 75 years of the Abolition of the Army is shown ,which is based on the only known photograph of the moment when, on December 1, 1948, José Figueres Ferrer, President of the Founding Board of the Second Republic, hits a battlement of the wall in the Bellavista Barracks, current National Museum, to affirm the Abolition of the Army. The image was taken by photojournalist Mario Roa Velázquez. The new coin shows the legend “75 years of the Abolition of the Army”, the years “1948 – 2023” and in micro text the phrase: “The world knows us and respects us for the decision to raise notebooks and violins.”
On the obverse, the face value is shown, 500 colones, the legends “República de Costa Rica” and “Banco Central de Costa Rica”, a latent image that when the coin is rotated the change from “500” to “BCCR” is observed. and five bars in high relief that make it easy to recognize by touch.
