Yesterday, March 2, as planned, the first 2 euro commemorative coin of this year in Slovakia was issued. This new piece commemorates the “Centenary of the first blood transfusion in Slovakia”.

This coin is the work of Mária Poldaufová, winner of a design contest called for the occasion. Her design is based on a rationally balanced and centrally guided circular composition with a repetitive rhythm of circles. In the middle of the smaller circle is an isosceles cross with blood group symbols. To the inside, a repeating outline of three stages with a dominant blood drop is embedded, emphasizing the entire symbolism of the coin. Fragments of test tubes and stylized drops of blood alternate in the central circle.

The Slovak Mint, Mincovňa Kremnica, has minted one million of these coins, of which except for 5,000 in Proof quality, the rest are intended for circulation.
