The Central Bank of Malta will issue a two-ounce silver coin dated 2022 next May dedicated to the famous novel by Stanisław Lem called Solaris. The piece has a very special feature, and that is that it contains a fluorescent print that makes it glow in the dark.
In this book, the author takes up one of the most popular themes in fantastic literature: the theme of contact, be it with an alien civilization, with a different way of life, or perhaps simply with the unknown, Lem does not explicitly indicate it in his novel. Perhaps this is why Solaris continues to fascinate several decades after its first publication.
The reverse of the coin shows the novel's main character, psychologist Kris Kelvin, arriving from Earth at a research station floating above the cytoplasmic ocean that covers the planet Solaris. It is a scene from the end of the novel, when Kelvin, alone, explores the surface of Solaris amid the fantastic shapes created by the ocean. The background is decorated with a colored metallic print, while the star is gold-plated.
On the obverse of the coin we can see an adaptation of the graphic design by the artist Daniel Mróz, together with the issuing country, the metal and its purity, and the mint date 2022.
The coin is presented in an elegant wooden case that includes a certificate of authenticity.
