This March, the Czech National Bank has issued a silver coin to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Appointment of Josef Karel Matocha as Archbishop of Olomouc.
Josef Karel Matocha, born May 14, 1888 in Pitín, was a prominent Czech Roman Catholic theologian and professor, Archbishop of Olomouc and Metropolitan of Moravia.
After completing his studies in philosophy and theology at the University of Olomouc and the Pontifical Gregorian University, he earned a doctorate in theology and began teaching Christian philosophy and dogmatics at the Olomouc Faculty of Theology in 1931.
On May 2, 1948, Pope Pius XII proclaimed Josef Karel Matocha Archbishop of Olomouc. Despite the fact that he held this position for a short time, since the communist rulers interned him after the coup of February 1950.
The obverse of the coin features a cross in a crown of thorns partially covered by a small coat of arms of Archbishop Josef Karel Matocha. Also shown is the text “ČESKÁ REPUBLIKA” written around the outer circle, its face value of “200 Kč” near the bottom edge of the coin, and the Czech Mint mark “Č” and “M”, located on the lower right edge of the small shield.
On the reverse of the coin we see a portrait of Josef Karel Matocha, a simplified version of the coat of arms of the Archdiocese of Olomouc with the years “1948” and “2023”, and the inscriptions “JOSEF KAREL MATOCHA” and “JMENOVÁNÍ ARCIBISKUPEM OLOMOUCKÝM ” around the outer circle of the coin.
The coin has been minted with an alloy containing 925 parts of silver and 75 parts of copper. It is also issued in two versions, in BU quality and in Proof quality. The Proof quality coins have a smooth edge with the Czech inscription “ČESKÁ NÁRODNÍ BANKA * Ag 0.925 * 13 g *”. While the BU quality coins have a grooved edge. The coin is 31mm in diameter, weighs 13g and is 2.2mm thick.
