This is how the Austrian Mint presents us with the last coin it issued last year, although already dated 2023, with which it wants to wish us luck for the year that has just begun.

Give a very special pig as a lucky charm at the turn of the year, expressing optimism. Because at any moment something unexpected can happen, something surprisingly pleasant. With this new coin, you wish someone in these turbulent times and for the new year who can say at the end: We were very lucky.

Pig and luck

For many, the change of the year means transforming fears and uncertainties into new hopes and new goals. Especially in turbulent times like the ones we live in. Since time immemorial, customs have spread to evoke good luck and abundance in the new year. The most popular symbol of luck in Austria is the pig. The real and physical pig did not represent luck, but the necessary food for survival.

The domestic pig: it has been useful to humans for about 9,000 years. Especially in Europe and East Asia, people like to eat a lot of pork. In earlier times, the pig literally represented a sufficient supply of food; entire families feasted on a menu consisting only of pork. A well-known saying "bad luck" was supposedly coined in the 16th century, in the bad days when people didn't have enough to eat. Those were still lucky if they had at least one pig.

In times past and in rural areas, no one wanted to depend solely on luck. The people prepared themselves by preparing the festivities for the slaughter. Today it can be seen as an excellent example of responsible and sustainable management. The ultimate goal of this slaughter party: to turn the entire pig, except for the hair and bones, into valuable food.

The design of the coin

The reverse of this lucky coin shows a pig stretching out its snout among clover leaves and clover flower heads. The pig has been lucky and has found a delicious clover, even four leaves. Due to its rarity, it is made to be considered a symbol of luck. Pig and clover: two well-known lucky charms in one coin.

The obverse of the nine-sided coin shows the coats of arms of the nine federal provinces of Austria, its face value “5 euros” and the name of the issuing country “Republic of Austria”.

This 5 euro face value coin, like all those issued by Austria in this value, can be purchased in two versions, the copper one at face value and the silver one, presented in the portfolio you see above, at a price of 19, €80 plus shipping costs, in the virtual store of the Austrian mint.
