With the coin "The Healing Power of Bears", issued today, January 18, the series of five pieces "The Eyes of the World" is completed, issued by the Austrian Mint. The peculiarity of this collection is that on all the coins, the eyes of the animals represented, one per continent, are with Swarovski crystals.

To the indigenous peoples of North America, a bear was not just a bear and humans were just one type of being among other beings. The bear also had a soul and was considered a supernatural being that was looked at with a mixture of wonder and fear. The calm, self-confidence and imperturbability conveyed in his expression made one believe that he had healing powers.

In the mythology of the indigenous peoples of North America, who today call themselves Native Americans, the bear was credited with great strength and healing powers. In some legends, bears instruct humans in medicine and herbalism, and there are even stories in which bears change shapes without being recognized by humans.


Native Americans on the Great Plains performed a bear dance before hunting a brown bear, in which the hunters, led by a bearskin-clad shaman, called for protection from supernatural powers. Before, during and after the bear hunt, numerous taboos were imposed in order to reconcile the bear's soul with death. These rituals express a worldview that is unwilling to make distinctions between humans and nature. Animals, plants, stones and elements also have a soul.

On the coin's obverse, a bear stands tall against a forest backdrop, framed by an ornament reminiscent of Native American crafts. 

The reverse features a stylized close-up bear head looking directly at the viewer through emerald green eyes set with Swarovski crystals.
