The United States Mint will begin the 2023 academic year with the issuance on January 30 of the eighteenth dollar coin from the American Innovation series. This coin collection is intended to honor innovation and innovators from each of the States and Territories that make up the United States.

Aptly designed, this new coin represents the State of Ohio and pays homage to the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad was an organized, clandestine network of individuals, families, friends, and churches that covertly helped slaves escape to freedom. More than a dozen routes through Ohio are known to stand as memorials to runaway slaves and those who helped them on their way .

Other states had active lines within the clandestine Underground Railroad network, but Ohio's role was pivotal. Ohio was the southernmost free state bordering the northernmost slave states of Kentucky and (then) Virginia. There were an estimated 5,000 kilometers of trails throughout the state with safe houses, or "stations," helping fugitives on their escape to freedom.

The reverse design shows two hands clasped tightly together, the upper arm pulling the lower arm up, representing the support and strength required by both parties to reach the Underground Railroad. A chain attached to a rustic shackle around the wrist of the lower arm breaks and fragments, alluding to the hope of freedom.

Designed by Justin Kunz and engraved by Phebe Hemphill, the obverse features the same design common to the entire series, featuring an image of the Statue of Liberty in profile and the inscriptions "$1" and "IN GOD WE TRUST." (IN GOD WE TRUST).

 

The coins in this series show the year of minting or issue, the mint mark and the text "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (of many, one) on the edge of the coins.

Beginning in 2018 and ending in 2032, the American Innovation coin series is intended to honor innovation and innovators by issuing $1 coins for each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and all five US territories. United States: Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, US Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Coins are available at face value in the United States. The order of issuance is the same in which the States ratified the Constitution of the United States or were admitted to the Union. Once a coin is issued for each state, coins for the District of Columbia and the territories will be released.
