The Bank of Latvia has issued a silver collector's coin dedicated to the distinguished figure of Latvian culture Imants Ziedonis, under the name "Star Dust".
Imants Ziedonis (May 3, 1933 – February 27, 2013) lives in people's memory as a creative, active and energetic person, one of the most outstanding Latvian poets. A dreamer and an inspirer. A visionary who had the ability to see and create beyond borders. He able to see stardust in supposedly trivial things.
The creative work of Imants Ziedonis is one of the 99 values of the Latvian Cultural Canon. He was a philosopher of poetry capable of putting big thoughts in small words. A complicated and versatile personality whose field of activity extended far beyond the poetic space: he was the initiator of the Liberation of the Big Trees movement, the author of the ideas of the programs of the Latvian Culture Foundation: Daugava, Spīdola and the People's Archive. A person who established the criteria for Latvian identity in the cultural space of the restored independent Latvia. He always urged people to learn more about his country.
The graphic design of the coin has been created by the artist and illustrator Līga Kitchen. The obverse and reverse of the coin feature various images. The walking man symbolizes the search for truth, meaning and belonging. While the constellation symbolizes the interconnection between the earth and the sky, it underlines the fact that human beings, like stardust, are part of the universe. The tree abundant in living beings represents vivacity, so intertwined with the vibrant industriousness of the poet himself and the nature of his texts.
The center features an image of a person in motion with dotted connecting lines running through their body resembling a constellation. In the background of this image, a starry sky is represented in the upper part of the coin, while in the lower part appears a ground with frost of different intensity. The inscription “IMANTS ZIEDONIS” appears in the semicircle on the right along the upper edge of the obverse.
The center shows a tree with branches full of buds and different living beings, including a person reading a book. One of the lower branches is in the shape of the number "5" with the inscription "EURO" at the top. The inscription "2023", arranged in a semicircle, is at the bottom right.
The edge bears the inscriptions "LATVIJAS REPUBLIKA" and "LATVIJAS BANKA", separated by rhombic dots.
