2022 has just begun, the year in which for the first time in Spain three commemorative 2-euro coins will be issued, one of a common type, for the 35th Anniversary of the Erasmus Program, and two of a national type, one dedicated to the Garajonay National Park. belonging to the World Heritage series (I showed it here a few days ago), and the one that we will know today with which the V Centenary of the first Around the World will be celebrated.

With this coin it is commemorated that on September 6, 1522, three years and 14 days after the departure and 37,753 nautical miles sailed (69,918 kms), the Nao Victoria captained by Juan Sebastián Elcano completed the greatest maritime adventure in the history of the navigation: the First Around the World.

The first circumnavigation was a feat that had immediate repercussions in multiple areas: commerce, communications, botany and zoology, cartography, and of course, it verified that the earth was spherical.

 

On the obverse, in the center of the coin and on a background of a globe, the image of Juan Sebastián Elcano is reproduced, taken from the portrait that is kept in the Naval Museum of Madrid, on which they appear, in its lower part and in capital letters, the legends 1519 1522, JUAN SEBASTIÁN ELCANO and PRIMUS CIRCUMDEDISTI ME.
On your left, the mint mark; To its right, in capital letters, the legend Spain and the year of issue 2022. Surrounding all the motifs and legends, in the outer circular area of the coin, appear the twelve stars of the European Union.

On the edge of the coin appears the inscription: «2 * *» repeated six times and alternately oriented from bottom to top and from top to bottom.

The issue volume is 1,000,000 pieces that will be issued during the first quarter of 2022.
