The Swiss Mint, Swissmint, has issued today, January 13, the first coin of a new series called "Swiss Glaciers", in these new bi-metallic and facial type coins of 10 francs three of the largest glaciers will be represented. important of the approximately 1,500 that exist in the Swiss Alps.

The first coin features the Morteratsch Glacier, one of the largest glaciers in the Alps and the largest in the Bernina region, in the canton of Graubünden. It reached its maximum extent during the Little Ice Age in the mid-19th century. Since then it has receded about three kilometers in length, shrinking about 40 meters a year. The meltwater that descends has caused the formation of several caves under the tongue of the glacier, at the end of the ice flow. In earlier times, the Morteratsch Glacier extended into the valley, which is why it is also called the Valley Glacier. Today, the glacier is still about 6.4 km long and covers an area of 14.9 km2.

Climate change is causing most of the world's glaciers to recede. For this reason, efforts are being made to stop the retreat of glaciers, for example, by covering the surface with ice during the warm season.

If the glaciers of the Alps continue to melt, Europe will have problems, since the Alps fulfill the function of storing water in winter to release it in summer and feed the rivers. If the melting speeds up there will be an increase in the levels of the rivers and floods in the short term, and if measures are not taken, in the medium and long term the consequences can be dramatic.
