On September 15, 1821, the independence of Guatemala was declared, therefore in this 2021 the bicentennial of its independence is celebrated. To celebrate the occasion, the government of the country has decided to issue a coin and a banknote alluding to the anniversary that will begin to be distributed during the month of September.
The 1 quetzal face and purity 925 silver coin has been minted by the Fabrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre - Real Casa de la Moneda. There are a total of 5,000 pieces that make up the issue that will go on sale at a price of 420 quetzals (approximately 47 euros).
The coin is inspired by the independence uprising of the Mayan K'iche 'people, which arose in Totonicapán in 1820. It shows one of the representative figures of the indigenous uprising, Atanasio Tzul, taken from the sculpture made by Rodolfo Galeotti Torres . On the left is the legend "ATANASIO TZUL / LÍDER INDIGENA", on the left the face value "1 Quetzal". Below are the figures that comprise the bicentennial «1821-2021». The central design of the coin is surrounded by the legend "BICENTENARIO DE LA INDEPENDENCIA DE GUATEMALA".
