The Central Bank of Malta has just made the official presentation of one of the commemorative 2-euro coins that has raised the most expectations both nationally and internationally this year. Both for the theme to which it is dedicated, as well as its successful way of being reflected in a coin, this piece is issued under the name Heroes of the Pandemic, and wants to be a recognition of the health personnel who have been and are on the front line of the fight of the pandemic caused by Covid-19.
The image presented by the coin corresponds to a photo of two Maltese nurses, Doreen Zammit and Charmaine Cauchi, dressed in their corresponding protective equipment, at the moment they give each other a supportive hug, with their eyes closed, before treating patients with coronavirus at the Mater Dei Hospital in Malta. The photograph, taken by nurse Diane Faenza, captured the climate of stress, fear and anger among health workers at the harshest moment of the first hello of the pandemic.
The Bank of Malta held a ceremony today, Thursday 29 July, in which the Governor of the Central Bank, Edward Scicluna, presented one of these coins to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health, Chris Fearne, on behalf of medical professionals. The coin has also been given to the three protagonist nurses.
Governor Edward Scicluna said: "It is a small but significant national tribute to recognize the selfless efforts of the many anonymous people who have been on the front lines during these difficult times, not only for the present but also for posterity."
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health Chris Fearne expressed his appreciation to the Governor and the Central Bank of Malta for recognizing the hard work of all those who contributed to the health sector in Malta during this pandemic.
The coins have been minted at the Monnaie de Paris in France and bear his mint mark. The national side of the coin was designed and engraved by Maria Anna Frisone, and shows the two medical professionals preparing to face the unknown. The reverse of the coin shows the common side.
The issue is made up of 60,000 BU quality coins, which will only be available on coincards and will be sold at € 15 each. With this issue, the Bank presents a new style of coincard in the form of an attractive wallet (same presentation as those issued by San Marino). The coincard was designed by Melvin Bugeja and incorporates a representation of the mural on the subject created by the artist Justin Bonnici, which represents a health worker crushing the Covid-19 virus with her hand, and a photograph of the nurses.
